I found this game system in Akihabara, Tokyo last week. Its an emulator for the Famicom, known in the US as the original NES, and it was only $10! I decided against buying it however since I don't have any games, and power-wise it doesn't voltage switch so it would probably blowup in the states.
Anyway, the best thing about this game system is the tagline on the front of the box:
Everybody gets off for only $10. I'd have to say that's pretty amazing!
Oh my god.
Let me just say it again.
Oh my god.
If you ever thought you were good at Tetris, prepare to learn true humiliation. Apparently this guy is the best Tetris player in the world, and I can see why. The video is about 6 1/2 min, so if you get tired of watching after the first min (and how could you! I was mesmerized), at least skip to the middle, where he unbelievably "turns it up a notch":
Also at the very end, he plays invisible Tetris while the credits play. I never knew you could beat Tetris, but I guess you can. This guy must constantly see things in the world as objects that need to fit into other objects.
I'll just come straight out and say it; do not click this link:
Thanks to Dice its the most mindless fun I've had in a while, but really, do not click this link:
I know its tempting...what is there to lose right? And if you score high (on normal level or above) you can enter "Six Apart" as the group name for a little friendly scoreboard competition. Seriously though, avoid this by not clicking this link:
Stop. I know what you're thinking; "Surely I can just take a peek? Surely I can beat Garth's stratospheric score?" This is false hope and the first step to regaining perspective is to not click this link:
Ok, the gears are turning, and your formulating plans in your head, but how could you even know not having clicked this link? What could this link hold of value for you? I beg you to please reconsider the clicking of this link and possibly find other underlined words on which to depress your mouse! I would be heartbroken and sick with moral doubt and glee if I knew I had been some how responsible for you clicking this link:
I can see that my words have fallen on deaf ears. It is obvious to me that as soon as you leave this blog entry (most likely via this link) you are going to head straight for this link. So be it. Don't say I didn't warn you.
So my last post about playing Prince of Persia got me thinking about other games I used to really enjoy back in the good old days of my Mac 512K E. In addition to the original Prince of Persia, I was also enslaved to "Beyond Dark Castle".
I also had the original "Dark Castle", but it was never as much fun to me, maybe because you couldn't save your progress, so if you wanted to leave the computer, to say, eat food or go to the bathroom, you were stuck.
In Beyond, you could save your game, but you had to make it to this special control room to do it. Once you made it there, you had to pull one of 4 (or 8?) levers and then it would save your game. I liked that you could still die while trying to get to the save room. It gave it that little bit of risk, while not being uncomprimising.
The level shown above is where you ended up if you fell down to the bottom of the screen in certain levels. You ended up in the dungeon where you had to make your way down past bats, zombies and blades, knock out the tourturer, grab the keys and then run back up again to unlock one of the 5 doors at the top.
