A movie that I saw at one of the San Francisco International Film Festivals a few years back has finally made it to the US from France, or at least on Netflix. When I left the theater I wasn't sure what I thought about this movie, but its grown on me. The cinematography is beautifully done and the whole film feels like a dream.
The pace is a little slow so and its two hours long so it requires some investment, but I think its definitely worth it. As a coming of age story, Innocence is more metaphorical than direct with the subject. However I think that vagueness helps translate the feelings of uncertainty that someone making this transition feels.
There is a movie with a similar subject, the Japanese "A Gentle Breeze in the Village", that I'm eager to see come out on video in the US later this year. I'd recommend renting Innocence now and scanning The Embarcadero listings for "A Gentle Breeze..." later this summer.
Just uploaded a few photos from my trip to Portland for OSCON. I was too busy preparing for my presentation to really take many pictures during the conference, so most of these are from afterward with my friend Aaron. We managed to get in a wine bar, dinner, a visit to the Japanese Garden and the rose garden during my breif stay. It was fast but fun!
